Josef Liesler

Czech painter, illustrator and graphic artist Josef Liesler was born on September 19, 1912 in Vidolice near Kadan and died on August 23, 2005 in Prague. In his work, in addition to the original themes, he also used fragments of motifs from artworks by Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Francisco Goya, etc., and combined them with his vision and perception. This creates surrealistically rich, free and slightly improvised compositions, thematically free-levitating between the present and history. He has received a number of awards for his work, for example The most beautiful stamp of the year, which was awarded to him by UNESCO for a serie of five postage stamps entitled International hydrological decade, issued on April 25, 1974.

Each exhibition different

And it was not only the place of birth near Kadan, but above all the breadth and freedom of Josef Liesler's work, that led the gallery under the white tower to use the painter's name in its title. The gallery is open to any art. From abstract creation through realism to sculptures, ceramics, glass, interactive installations, etc. The exhibition changes regularly every month. Each exhibition should be as different as possible from the previous one. Vernissages are always held for individual exhibitions. The gallery also hosts art evenings, workshops for children, art workshops and guided tours.

Among the exhibitions in the last two years, let's name, for example, Emma and Barbora Srncova, Lukas Musil or Tomas Junker.

The Gallery under the open sky

In addition to the exhibition space inside the town hall, GJL also manages the The Gallery under the open sky on Studentske square. There are, installed on large-format panels, mainly photographic exhibitions, projects of Kadan schools and the work of local artists.
