Between Hornosazavska upland in the southwest and Stredolabska table in the northeast, by the river Vrchlice. In the middle ages, one of the most important Czech royal cities, mainly due to silver mining. Workplaces of Kilian Ignac Dientzenhofer, Frantisek Maxmilian Kanka, Petr Brandl or Karel Havlicek Borovsky, birthplace of Josef Kajetan Tyl. The city monument reserve with the unique church of st. Barbora and the monumental baroque Jesuit college is the part of the UNESCO world heritage site.
